During the “Olympic Culture Young Reporters Initiative”, a total of 25 young reporters from primary and secondary schools took a tour of the National Speed Skating Oval, a smart winter Olympic venue. They learned that it is the world’s first venue to use transcritical carbon dioxide direct cooling technology to make ice, the carbon emissions from the nearly 12,000 square meters of ice surface are close to zero, reducing carbon emissions by 25,000 tonnes per year. This exceeds the carbon emissions reduction achieved by planting 1.2 million trees and can save about 2 million kWh of electricity a year, equivalent to the electricity consumption of over 6,000 households in Beijing for one month.
A dedicated wall within the Ice Ribbon shows the performance of gold medallists in speed skating at the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022. During the Games, the Ice Ribbon witnessed the athletes broke 13 Olympic records and one world record. Standing in front of the wall, the young reporters recognized that each record lives up to the Olympic motto of “Higher, Faster, Stronger – Together”, which will inspire more people to pursue excellence, solidarity and fair play in their studies, work and life.
In the practice session, the young reporters communicated with venue engineers, guides, volunteers and visitors. They also experienced the fun of skating under the instruction of coaches. The young reporters gained a lot from the tour at the Ice Ribbon. They promised to serve as young envoys of Olympic culture and tell the Olympic stories to people around them from the perspective of youths, covering winter Olympic technology, humanist stories, sustainability, green building and other topics.
