On the evening of 7 August, the opening ceremony of the 16th Beijing Olympic City Sports Culture Festival and the 6th “8.8” Beijing Sports Shopping Carnival was held at the Dual Olympic Courtyard of the Beijing Olympic Museum. Sima Hong, Deputy Mayor of Beijing and President of the Beijing Olympic City Development Association (BODA), attended the opening ceremony. Kirsty Coventry, President of the International Olympic Committee, sent a congratulatory message. Han Zirong, member of the Party Leadership Group of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Chair of the Beijing Federation of Literary and Art Circles and Executive Vice President of BODA, delivered speeches at the opening ceremony.

In her speech, Han Zirong stated that this year’s Beijing Olympic City Sports Culture Festival features over 20 sports events and cultural exchange activities. The “Olympic Sports and Culture Caravan”, Run Girls and other activities will allow the public to admire the Olympic legacy up close, and the “Great Olympic Vibe” exhibition will convey Beijing’s wishes to the XXV Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026. The “8.8” Beijing Sports Shopping Carnival around the theme of “Sports Plus” will highlight new scenarios, new brands, and new consumption. A series of online and offline activities will be held to tap the potential of new consumer trends such as emerging sports and recreational sports, incorporating diverse forms of business like food, music, travel, and shopping to promote the integrated development of culture, commerce, tourism and sports. The festival and the carnival, which are held at the same time, are expected to foster a thoughtful, high-quality sports culture brand and encourage greater public participation in the development of Beijing as the “dual Olympic city” and the development of sports.

Kirsty Coventry, the new IOC President, sent a congratulatory message to the opening ceremony of the festival. This is the first time the new President has extended a congratulatory message and best wishes to a mass sports event in the capital city. She said that Beijing, a city where the ancient and the modern blend seamlessly, has made history as the world’s first city that has hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics. Through a diverse line-up of activities, the Beijing Olympic City Sports Culture Festival will attract more people to engage in sports, promote the Olympic culture and help integrate the Olympic legacy into people’s life.

Several major sporting events to be held in Beijing in the second half of the year were announced at the opening ceremony, including the China Open, the WTT China Smash, the World Athletics Continental Tour (Beijing), the ISU Figure Skating Olympic Qualifying Event, and the ISU Snowboard and Freestyle Skiing Big Air World Cup. The upcoming mass sports events include the “Joyful Road of the Winter Olympics” cycling tour, Run Girls, the Little Triathlete, the Five-Ring Medal Challenge and the Beijing Teqball Challenge.

The 16th Beijing Olympic City Sports Culture Festival is co-hosted by BODA, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports, the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, the Beijing Municipal Commerce Bureau, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, the Beijing People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the Chaoyang District People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, Changping District People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, Yanqing District People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, and Beijing State-owned Assets Management Co., Ltd. The festival aims to carry forward the Olympic legacy, advance the public fitness initiative and promote the development of youth sports and the Paralympic cause. It serves to meet the people’s needs for high-quality sports and cultural life and build a sports culture brand of public fitness with international influence. In addition to the opening ceremony, the main activities of this year’s festival will include the Little Triathlon, the Five-Ring Medal Challenge, Run Girls, the “Olympic Sports and Culture Caravan”, the Paralympic sports culture promotion activities, the “Joyful Road of the Winter Olympics” and the Beijing Teqball Challenge, so as to create an Olympic themed sports culture event that integrates competition, leisure and entertainment, interactive experiences, and consumption. The side events will include a special exhibition themed “Olympic Winter Games Promotes the Development of the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Sports, Culture and Tourism Belt”, the 21st Beijing International Sports Film Week, youth Olympic education, and cultural promotion activities. These colourful sporting events and Olympic culture activities are designed to promote public fitness throughout the city, showcasing the unique charm of the dual Olympic city.

Co-hosted by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports, the Beijing Municipal Commerce Bureau, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, the Tianjin Municipal Bureau of Sports, the Hebei Provincial Bureau of Sports and the Chaoyang District People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, the official event of the 6th “8.8” Beijing Sports Shopping Carnival themed “Passion for Sports, Joyful Summer” will be held from 7 to 10 August at the celebration plaza of the Beijing Olympic Park Central Area. The offline carnival features 17 sports events and activities, including competitions, cultural performances and interactive experiences, providing a great stage for the public to enjoy sports. Over 80 merchants participate in the offline carnival, covering various fields such as sports technology, outdoor products, sports tourism, sports rehabilitation, cultural and creative products, and financial services. There is also an Olympic themed cultural exhibition showcasing the glorious journey and unique charm of Beijing as the first city in the world to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

The “Olympic Sports and Culture Caravan” photo spot designed by the Beijing Olympic City Development Centre serves as a mobile platform to promote the Olympic spirit and spread the Olympic culture. Visitors can admire and take photos of the precious exhibits, including the torch, medals and mascots from the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics and the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022. Additionally, there are dedicated areas displaying the badges, licensed products and Olympic-themed books. The caravan will be featured at key events and activities during this year’s Sports Culture Festival, making it a “mobile Olympic museum”.

Co-hosted by the Ya’ao Business District Alliance of New Consumption Innovation and Beijing Beichen Industrial Group Co., Ltd., the 2025 Cool Fun in Ya’ao International Hi Beer Festival will open on 8 August and last for 26 days. It is a municipal-level summer carnival involving multiple forms of business in nearly 20 key areas of the Ya’ao business district, including POLPAS and the China National Convention Center Grand Hotel. Visitors can experience the unique charm of the Olympic legacy in the Ya’ao business district and get a taste of the district’s events, exhibitions, culture, commerce, sports and tourism services. This will help boost the summertime economy and consumption in the district.

Hosted by Chaoyang Culture and Tourism Group, the “Cool Fun in Olympic Park” 8.8 National Fitness Day event will run from 6 to 10 August on the boulevard on the east side of the sculpture area in the Beijing Olympic Park Central Area and in the Olympic Forest Park. The experience activities will include the Beijing Olympic Tower vertical running, aerial yoga, night running, rock climbing and pickle ball. There will also be food trucks and music flash mobs. Based on the central axis, the event aims to inject new vitality into the cultural and tourism ecosystem and spur the economic vitality in the Beijing Olympic Park Central Area.

According to the hosts, the 6th “8.8” Beijing Sports Shopping Carnival will run from 1 to 31 August. This year’s carnival follows and upgrades the format of previous editions, featuring online purchase, online competition, online booking, online learning and offline carnival. It provides one-stop sports shopping services for the public, covering multiple fields such as public fitness, event spectating, sports tourism and technology experiences. The “online booking” part involves various platforms like Beijing Fitness Map and China Open. More than 1,000 sports venues will offer free or discounted services, covering fitness, training and sports travel routes. In addition to the main venue activities in the Beijing Olympic Park Central Area, this year’s Sports Shopping Carnival also features side events in 16 districts of Beijing and the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (BDA), so as to help foster a new landscape of fitness for all, construct new sports shopping scenarios and promote the integrated development of culture, commerce, tourism and sports.
Fu Xiaohui, Zhang Qian and Li Yanling, Vice Presidents of BODA, attended the opening ceremony, along with Piao Xuedong, Guo Huaigang and Wu Xiaojie. Approximately 120 people were present at the opening ceremony, including leaders from member organisations of the Beijing Olympic City Sports Culture Festival Organizing Committee, the Tianjin Municipal Bureau of Sports, the Hebei Provincial Bureau of Sports, and the sports bureaus of Beijing’s 16 districts and BDA. They also included representatives from sports companies and associations, athlete representatives, representatives of Olympic participants, representatives from Olympic venues, and diplomats of Greece, Australia and other countries.
